2011 QB/WR Technique

Quarterbacks
Stance
  • Feet aligned under the arm pits, non throwing foot slightly behind throwing foot (toe to instep)
  • Arms extended from the center with throwing hand on top with thumbs together
  • Chest up with eyes on the defense
Drops – Baseball turn, little 3, little 5, sprint out, Big 3 with gather, Big 5
  • 3 step drop should push to 4 yds deep
  • 5 step drop should push to 7 yds deep
  • Do not allow buckets steps!
  • Keep front shoulder open with chin on the shoulder alignment
Ball Position
  • Should be carried on the throwing side of the chest slightly below the ear
  • During the drop – ball should move “tit to tit”
Throwing Mechanics
  • Stress a pull back with the throwing arm and front arm pressure
  • Chest should be stretched like a rubber band with elbows moving out
  • Front arm should then drive away from the ball
  • Front knee should be in a flexed position
  • After release, the ball should flex down with thumb pointed at thigh
  • No “recoil” at bottom of motion

Wide Receivers
Stance
  • Inside leg up
  • Distance from back of front heel to toe of back foot is at least shoulder width
  • Toes should be pointed straight ahead - front foot slightly turned in for comfort
  • Knees should be flexed so that on take-off there is no more bend needed
  • 80-20 weight distribution on front foot
  • Arms should be in “combative” position: bend arms at the elbows and hold hands at chest height-hands should be closed but not clinched
Running
  • Pump arms forward and back, close to body – avoid side-to-side swinging
  • Forward body lean
  • Eyes up at defender (do not look at break point on ground)
Break
  • Drive in and out of cuts
  • At break point, “snap” chest down – head over chest, over knees, over toes
  • Pump arms throughout cut, do not let them go dead
  • Keep arms close to body, do not flail out
